(from life during foreplay)

after the debris the vacancy sign stutters on
& a type of action ensues, pragmatic & liminal
like watching you stretch or playing the what if game
for hours, a limited organisational impulse
clearing the decks the way your ankles
disappear into your shoes & we
can’t concentrate for hours or spooked by history
& the pressure you imagine like footage
of a sunset shot from space a cigarette hovers
halfway between the ashtray & your mouth.
but are you picking it up or putting it down
when the cops burst in? don’t talk to me
about motives: you’re a bankroll, i’m the kitchen engine.
            everyone’s coughing.
