‘A Fluke’ is a mistranslation of Stéphane Mallarmé’s ‘Un coup de dés...’ with parallel French text. It was first published in 2005 in a handsome edition by Monogene, PO Box 224, Thirroul NSW 2515, Australia: ISBN 0975138324.
Mallarmé’s 1897 poem ‘Un coup de dés...’ was designed to be read across a two-page spread, not page by page. This text is laid out with a double page opening (called a ‘sheet’ here) on each screen, following the original design. The screen image is necessarily very wide, and if you wish to print the text, your printer should be set to landscape rather than portrait orientation.
Each two-page sheet of English text is linked to a two-page sheet of Mallarmé’s original poem in French. You can alternate between them by clicking on the links at the head of each sheet. Those links also let you move forward to the next sheet, or back to the previous sheet.
Font: If you have Garamond installed on your computer, the text will appear in that font; otherwise Georgia, then Times, Times New Roman, New York, MS Serif, or serif generic text, in that order.
